Sendai Japanese Earthquake
On March 11th, 2011 at 2:46 pm in Japan a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck the east coast of Japan. The earthquakes destruction was massive and lasted for a long 6 minutes causing much damage. This earthquake is called the Sendai Earthquake and in Japan, 東日本大震災.
This earthquake is considered one of the biggest to ever in the world and it is the biggest ever recorded in Japan. The earthquake set off a chain reaction of a massive tsunami that swept the japan east coast and also caused the Fukushima Daichi nuclear power plant to meltdown. More than 1,000 aftershocks came after this first earthquake, the strongest being 7.9, these aftershocks seriously hindered and hurt those who were trying to survive, find relatives and rebuild. Adding onto the destruction of the earthquake the tsunami swept a lot of the rubble and ruins from the earthquake across Japan and many people who had managed to survive the earthquake were then killed by the tsunami. The nuclear power plant meltdown meant the area was unsafe to be due to the massive amounts of radiation leaking out of the power plant. This disaster in Japan received worldwide attention and many countries came to Japan’s aid at their time of need. |
